His Beatitude Metropolitan Constantine of the Orthodox Church of the USA came to Los Angeles fo
provide an Ecumenical Panakhyda Service with Bishop John Bura, Auxiliary Bishop of Philadelphia of
the Ukrainian Catholic Church.   This was to commemorate the 75th Anniversary of Holodomor.

During this weekend of November 8-9th, the Ukrainian community in Southern California turned up by
the hundreds to attend this Ceremony commemorating the 75th Anniversary of Holodomor.
 

On Saturday at the Ukrainian Catholic Church of The Blessed Virgin Mary of Los Angeles, a
presentation of songs and writings about the Holodomor was presented by Father Edward Danylo
Evanko of the Ukrainian Catholic Church of Canada.  This was followed by a “Holodomor Tryzna” a
meager meal of weak broth and black bread, honoring those who suffered starvation during
Holodomor.  Then all viewed a short documentary film on the Holodomor, and viewed a poster
exhibition on Holodomor.
Following the Memorial Service, a candlelight procession was made by all to the
Holodomor Memorial Plaque at the Civic Center Mall, in downtown Los Angeles.
After the Liturgies, all met at the Catholic Cathedral of Our Lady
of the Angels, in downtown Los Angeles.  The procession was
met and led by Monsignor Alexei Smith, Dean of the Cathedral.  
The Cathedral also hosted an exhibit of posters representing
Holodomor.
A Panakhyda [Requiem] Memorial Service was held by Metropolitan Constantine and Bishop John
Bura.  In attendance were: Very Reverend Vasyl Shtelen of Saint Andrew Orthodox Parish of Los
Angeles; Reverend Fathers Vasile Sauciur and Yurij Shakh of St. Vladimir Orthodox Parish of Los
Angeles; Father Myron Mykyta of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Los Angeles;
Protopresbyter Alexis Limonczenko of St. Michael Orthodox Parish in San Francisco; Very Reverend
Myron Mykhaylyuk of St. Mary Protectress Orthodox Parish in San Diego; Very Reverend Stephan
Repa of Carnegie, PA; Fr. James Bankston of the Ukrainian Catholic Parish of Our Lady of Perpetual
Help in San Diego; Father Edward Danylo Evanko of the Ukrainian Catholic Church of Canada;
Subdeacon Gary Gebet of St. Mary Protectress Orthodox Parish in San Diego; Subdeacon Curtis
Vose of St. Michael Orthodox Parish in San Francisco; and Subdeacon David DeJesus of Saint
Andrew Orthodox Parish of Los Angeles.
Hundreds were in attendance.
Several survivors of Holodomor were present.
The Kobzar choir, under the arrangement and direction of Gregory
Hallick-Holutiak, beautifully sang the Panakhyda of Kyrylo Stetsenko.

Sunday started with two concelebrated Liturgies.  One was at the
Ukrainian Catholic Church of The Blessed Virgin Mary of Los
Angeles, with Auxiliary Bishop John Bura of the Ukrainian Catholic
Church of the Philadelphia Eparchy.  The other Liturgy was at Saint
Andrew Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Los Angeles with
Metropolitan Constantine.
